Orphanage for Children – Manikkavasagar Illam (2012-2023)
Prior to 2012, the Manikkavasagar Illam was a Boys’ Home in Batticaloa, fully funded by Manitha Neyam Trust. Blossom Trust managed the Manikkavasagar Home from 2012 until the second quarter of 2023.
The Illam (meaning “home”) struggled with no regular income and was dependent on handouts and ad-hoc donations from well-wishers. At that time, it was in a dire position, struggling to meet the needs of more than 50 children.
Blossom Trust constructed a large home with a central sleeping hall, private study rooms, IT facilities, and six bathrooms and toilets. The Trust also maintained the facilities and provided additional tuition to help children achieve their academic goals.
However, due to the continuous reduction in children joining the Illam, along with boys over 16 years of age leaving, the number of resident boys dropped to fewer than 10. As a result, Blossom Trust withdrew its support, and the home has since been handed back to local government management.
